Uncaged Fury
Uncaged Fury. It was labeled an accident. But, I’m not convinced after reading the report. While it primarily consisted of large unpronounceable words that were completely gibberish to me, I was still able to piece together the gist. This accident apparently involved the misuse of mislabeled, highly unstable compounds. The cause of this mixup though was unclear. So too was the end result other than some sort of chaos until all contact with the facility went dark last week. There was one other mention that jumped out at me. The facility contained live test subjects. An itch along the back of my neck worsened as my mind struggled to wrap around the situation that my team and I were about to enter.
Upon arrival, the sheer scale of it left us in awe. The facility stretched out so far and wide that it appeared as if it were an entire city taking up nearly the entire horizon. It hammered home the uncomfortable fact that not a single person or automated system within was responsive. A chilling thought that left me with yet another nervous itch. If I hadn't already had a bad feeling about this job, I certainly did now. That feeling then only intensified once inside. Ghost town wasn’t strong enough to describe it. The massive expanses and endless rooms that presumably were once bustling hubs of scientific endeavors, now lie vacant and in ruin as if they had been subjected to some sort of super tornado.
Half a day later and about halfway to the site of the accident, I felt a presence in the distance. A large, looming shape out within the wreckage of the facility that disappeared just as I turned toward to face it. To call it fast was an understatement. No one on the team even saw it by the time I tried to point it out. My mind raced with every sound and flash of movement that followed as our pace slowed to a crawl; imagination running wild with what monstrous horror it could be. But before I could even decide on the best course of action, it reappeared descending upon us, talons outstretched and unquenchable bloodlust seeping outward from its eyes.
