Big Egg

One day it was simply here within our home.  A giant, white thing in the shape and facade of an egg.  But, it was not an egg.  It could not be an egg simply because of its monstrous size.  This unwelcome guest towered more than twenty times over that of even the tallest among us.  To lay an egg of such scale was clearly an impossibility, right?  But, if not an egg, then what was it and where did it come from?

The realization that none of us had seen or heard anything until it was already here one morning sent shockwaves of concern throughout the community.  Nothing about it or its sudden arrival felt natural as it now seemingly watched over us day after day.  Things went missing; much more than could be simply misplaced.  Many tried to attack it out of fear, but none could even scratch it and so whether we liked it or not, it was here to stay.

Then one morning, one of us was just gone.  Vanished without a trace.  Waves of fear and anxiety raged as a result of this abrupt loss.  The week following, everyone was on high alert.  But when nothing happened, the waters gradually settled like the calm aftermath of a storm.  Maybe these disappearances had nothing to do with the big egg or at least that is what we hoped before two more of the community vanished.

Three of us were drafted for a constant all day and night watch.  It was the absolute pits, but to refuse would be unthinkable.  Boredom quickly set in on the very first night.  Time dragged as days passed and wore us down to the point of absolute exhaustion.  Until one night just as I was teetering on the edge of sleep, I noticed a dim glow.  I woke the others and us three watched in stunned silence as the big egg glistened and began to hover off of the ground.  Nothing before had ever filled me with such all consuming fear.  I thought it was sure to crush us, but within a blink, it shot up into the sky and was gone never to return.  Few believe me all these years later as the last remaining survivor, but I know what I saw.  One day it will return and this time, I will be one of the ones that disappear.
